Contour Threads as an alternative to Rhytidectomy (face lift) is a new modality of treatment that has recently become available in Australia. In essence, a barbed thread or suture is used to lift the sagging areas of the face, neck and brow. Technically, this is a straightforward procedure where the thread enters the tissue in the hairline. The thread is then advanced in the fatty tissue layer and exits near the midline of the face or the neck and under the eyebrow in the forehead area. The tissue is then lifted and held on the barbed suture and the exiting barb is trimmed so that it does not protrude through the skin.
The procedure The procedure is carried out under either a local anaesthetic or under local and sedation at the Eden Institute of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery (1.5 - 2 hours for a full face or 1 hour for a brow). Dr Edinburg usually has the patient awake and alert at the end of the procedure to determine the end point of the lift according to the patient's wishes.
Possible Side Effects and Risks: Bruising, swelling and skin crepe - short lived.
