Carpal Tunnel

A condition known as Carpal Tunnel is caused by pressure on the median nerve in the hand at the wrist level. Carpal tunnel syndrome as a condition is characterised by the feeling of pins and needles, with pain occurring in the fingers and palm of the hand. These symptoms can occur during the day and/or may wake the patient at night.

Carpal TunnelLongstanding and severe symptoms may be irreversible, so carpal tunnel treatment should be sought early. There are many causes of this condition, and not all patients will require surgery. Generally, a neurologist will be required to confirm carpal tunnel diagnosis by performing a nerve conduction study.

At the Eden Institute of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery we are able to release the deep carpal ligament relieving pressure on the nerve. This procedure takes approximately 45 minutes and can be performed under general or local anaesthetic with sedation. Recovery usually takes 4-6 weeks. At the time of consultation Dr Edinburg will discuss with you the most appropriate option of treatment.

Trigger Finger

Trigger Finger is a condition that is characterised by pain when extending the finger caused by the tendon scraping on the pulley or tunnel that holds it close to the bone. The digit appears to be stuck and then all of a sudden is released like a trigger causing pain. The condition can affect all digits including the thumb.

To treat the condition the Eden Institute of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery performs a procedure to release of the tunnel or pulley holding the tendon. This procedure takes approximately 40 minutes and can be performed under general or local anaesthetic with sedation and recovery usually takes two weeks. Dr Edinburg will discuss the most appropriate option at the time of consultation.
