Skin Lesions

If a lesion is to be excised, whether benign or malignant, it should preferably be excised within the relaxed skin tension lines (mostly found in the wrinkle line) regardless as to what part of the body it is located. This means that a mole excised from the back should also be excised in the appropriate direction for a better outcome and scar appearance. As with any type of surgery, complications may occur, but are rare and usually minor. Patients should be aware that Dr Edinburg cannot control the healing process for such a procedure, as this will be totally dependent upon the genetics of the patient. However, Dr Edinburg may contribute to the success of the outcome through the use of various expert techniques such as orientation of the incision, proper placement of suture and correct post-operative care for the patient. Every surgical procedure produces a scar, however Dr Edinburg uses every technique available to minimise scarring. At the Eden Institute of Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery the nature of the scar will be discussed with the patient prior to a procedure being performed. If you have any concerns, these should be discussed with Dr Edinburg during your consultation.

Possible Side Effects and Risks: wound infection, wound breakdown and a scar. Most scars generally tend to heal satisfactorily but some scars may be thick, red, spread and wide.
