This procedure is suitable for both men and women. A mini-tummy tuck procedure removes excess skin and fat associated with weakness in the abdominal wall beneath your belly button. Compared with full Tummy Tuck Surgery, a mini-tummy tuck will leave a much smaller scar and has a significantly shorter down time.
During a mini tummy tuck, a small incision is made below the bikini line. Skin and fat are detached from the muscle, which may itself be tightened. Liposuction may be used to contour the area. Excess skin is removed and then the two skin sections are stitched back together.
Afterwards, you will wear a compression bandage for a few weeks to assist healing. Initial recovery depends on the extent of the procedure, but is generally around one to two weeks, after which you can return to work.
Dr Edinburg will help you to decide the best way to achieve the results you want from a mini tummy tuck.
If your loose skin is confined to your lower abdomen, a mini-tummy tuck may be the most appropriate procedure for you. It is simpler with less surgery and a shorter recovery time than a normal tummy tuck. In addition, your belly button should not have to be repositioned, as may be the case with a full tummy tuck. Of course, Dr Edinburg will help you assess which type of surgery is appropriate for your body.
Regular Tummy Tuck Surgery is most beneficial for those who have loose abdominal skin or weakened muscles that cannot be altered through diet and exercise. A mini-tummy tuck is a good option for those who have a small amount of ‘saggy’ abdominal skin and would like to sculpt their tummy into a more desirable shape. The exact benefits of a mini-tummy tuck and a regular tummy tuck vary from one individual to the next, it is, therefore, important to discuss your expectations with Dr Edinburg at the time of your consultation.
A mini-tummy tuck usually takes around 1-1 1/2 hours under general anaesthetic. At the Eden Institute, no two cases are the same and, therefore, procedures may take slightly more or less time depending on your presenting condition.
Mini-Tummy Tuck Surgery normally requires an overnight stay in hospital. After your surgery you will be visited by Dr Edinburg, who will check your surgery site and ensure that your wounds are healing effectively. During your overnight stay in hospital you will be monitored by staff who will do their best to ensure that you are comfortable and well looked after. Visitors are welcome to come to the hospital during visiting hours.
Recovery normally takes a few weeks, with a full return to physical activities in 6 weeks or so. It is important that you rest during this time to allow your body to heal and recover effectively. Because you will have stitches, it is important not to exert yourself or move around more than you need to for the first couple of weeks. Once your stitches have been removed and Dr Edinburg has consulted with you, you should be able to get back to most of your regular activities. Typically, you should be able to return to work within 10 to 14 days after your surgery.
The cost of mini-tummy tuck surgery will depend on the method and extent of surgery. Medicare and health funds have rebates associated with this procedure.
From January 2016, new Medicare guidelines resulted in patients eligible for the Medicare rebate for tummy tuck surgery being limited to those who have had substantial weight loss (>5 BMI points); have had weight stabilised for 6 months or more; had daily living activities affected; and who suffer from associated skin rashes.
Once Dr Edinburg has had the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your concerns, we will supply a full estimate of fees for your proposed surgery, so that you know all your facts and figures – medical and financial – before you make your decision.
You can find out more about the procedure cost on "How Much does it Cost" section.
