Breast Lift Surgery at Sydney’s Eden Institute can help uplift your breasts to a more youthful position, and can also be combined with Breast Augmentation Surgery or Breast Reduction Surgery to enhance the size and shape of your breasts.
As we get older our breasts can lose their firmness and start to droop. Pregnancy and breastfeeding, weight loss, gravity and a loss of skin elasticity can all take their toll, resulting in breasts that have lost their youthful shape and fullness.
As a qualified and experienced plastic surgeon, Dr Edinburg is a specialist in Breast Lift Surgery. With experience in a variety of Breast Lift Surgery techniques, Dr Edinburg will help you to work out a treatment plan that will give you the results that you are looking for.
Breast Lift Surgery involves lifting and reshaping the breast tissue to improve breast contour and firmness. The nipple and areola may be repositioned to a higher, more youthful position and, if necessary, enlarged areolas will be reduced. Excess skin is removed if there is a loss of elasticity.
Some people need Breast Augmentation Surgery at the same time to provide breast fullness. In that case, an implant is inserted under the chest (pectoral) muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. Incision lines are usually concealed in the natural creases underneath the breast, but some may be visible on the breast surface, although these will fade over time. Dr Edinburg will discuss what options are available, and which options are best suited for you at your consultation.
Some patients may need Breast Reduction Surgery in addition to a Breast Lift. Again, Dr Edinburg has the skills and experience to work with you to find the most optimal solution.
Following your Breast Lift Surgery, you will need to wear a compression bandage or support bra for approximately a week to minimise swelling and support your new breast shape during healing. There may be some soreness, bruising and swelling of the breasts, but once this has dissipated your new, younger-looking breast shape will be noticeable.
In our experience, Breast Lift surgery gives people an enormous amount of self-confidence, so the benefits of the surgery reach way beyond physical appearance; they reach into your personal life. As with all our treatments, Dr Edinburg aims to give you a natural look that is enhanced but not obvious.
Sagginess, a deflated shape and a loss of breast tissue are just some of the concerns mothers may have post-pregnancy and breastfeeding. All of these issues can be addressed with Breast Lift Surgery. The ageing process can also cause breasts to droop and lose firmness and skin elasticity. Middle-aged women and those who have experienced significant weight loss may also benefit from Breast Lift Surgery. This may be relevant for people who have undergone weight loss procedures such as Gastric Bypass or Bariatric Surgery. Generally, when you lose a lot of weight, you are left with a lot of excess, loose and draping skin. If the loose, sagging skin is especially prevalent on your breasts, then Breast Lift Surgery can be an effective option to consider. Another example is younger women who naturally have heavy and somewhat droopy breasts.
Many women consider Breast Lift Surgery to restore the former youthfulness to their breasts and to bring the breasts back into balance with the rest of their body.
Dr Edinburg enjoys bringing his many years of specialist plastic surgery experience to help assess and plan for each patient’s situation – no two people ever present with exactly the same problem. Dr Edinburg will consult with you to devise a plan that is tailored to your particular situation.
Breast Lift Surgery does not significantly alter the size of your breasts, and therefore some patients will need to have both procedures (which can be done at the same time). This is particularly relevant if you would like your breasts to look bigger and fuller. Depending on the size of your breasts and the level of droopiness, Dr Edinburg will assess your shape and needs with you to determine the best solution.
Breast lift surgery is not one-size fits all, and different options are suitable for different body shapes, breast sag and your lifestyle and goals. Our Plastic Surgeon, Dr Edinburg will always discuss with you what technique he is proposing for your specific situation.
Although you may think you prefer one technique over the other, it is not quite a s simple as that, as the reason for choosing any particular technique over another is dependent on a few factors, and the choice needs to be made by an experienced surgeon. Dr Edinburg will always discuss with you any options appropriate for you, bearing in mind the best combination of shape, healing, scars, safety and aesthetic result.
There are commonly 4 techniques used, and Dr Edinburg, with his years of experience, can modify as required:
Usually best for those with minimal sagging, with a line that runs about halfway along the top outer edge of the areola
May be referred to as the ‘donut lift’ due to the shape of the incision, and a great option for women with mild sagging and requiring subtle lifting. There is a circular incision around the entire outer edge of the areola
Ideal for women who have moderate sagging, requiring more breast reshaping. There are 2 incisions- one circular incision around the outer edge of the areola, and another vertical incision from the bottom of the areola down to the natural breast crease(inframammary fold). Nicknamed the ‘lollipop lift’ as the shape resembles a lollipop.
The incisions are placed in the shape on an anchor, and this lifting technique is usually best suited for women requiring dramatic reshaping to improve significant sagging. Also known as the ‘inverted T’ lift, this method requires 3 incisions- one circling the edge of the areola, one vertically from the bottom of the areola to the inframammary fold, and one made horizontally along the natural breast crease.
A Breast Lift does not improve emptyness, only sagging. As a result, many women choose to have implants inserted (breast augmentation) in the same operation to improve fullness.
Sound scary? You do not make decisions alone. Dr Edinburg has many years of Specialist Plastic Surgery expertise, and will work with you to help you understand your options and surgery plan so that you can achieve the most appropriate outcome for your body.
Dr Edinburg’s preferred techniques are the Crescent Lift, Lollipop Lift, or Doughnut Lift. The technique used will dependon the size of the breasts, the degree of sagging, and whether you require Breast Augmentation Surgery at the same time.
Dr Edinburg respects body tissue and treats it gently. Optimum care is taken to prevent crushing and damaging the tissue, which is vital to minimise scarring. Other scar-minimising techniques, such as application of steri-strips, creams, massage and silicone are utilised where appropriate, and are of value, secondarily to the expertise of a skilled, experienced plastic and reconstructive surgeon.
Breast Lift Surgery usually takes 1 to 3 hours under general anaesthetic. This is a general guide and depends heavily on which surgery is proposed for you. Dr Edinburg will thoroughly assess and plan your best course of action when he meets with you.
As with any cuts or surgery, Breast Lift Surgery does leave some scarring, simply because of where the incisions are made. However, Dr Edinburg has over 20 years of Breast Lift Surgery experience as a fully qualified and accredited specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon. All of this means that he always uses his specialist skills during surgery to minimise scarring as well as to support you with post-operative advice and care. Initially, your scar will be red and sensitive. However this should start to reduce within the first few weeks after surgery. It is important to keep the skin moisturised and your body hydrated to help the healing process. Always avoid direct sunlight to the scarring area as this will slow down the healing process.
Breast Lift Surgery may require an overnight hospital stay. If combined with other surgeries, such as Breast Augmentation or Breast Reduction, this may be longer. As with all our surgeries, we tailor the surgery according to your body’s situation, and we will advise you fully and plan with you.
You can generally resume normal activities within 7 to 10 days. However strenuous activity or fitness routines should be avoided. Full recovery, including all healing, normally takes around 2 weeks. During the process, to ensure that your breasts maintain their shape and achieve the right amount of support, you may be advised to wear a specialist support bra. As this surgery is individually tailored to your body, recovery time may vary. Please discuss this in more detail with Dr Edinburg.
