Surgical Breast Reduction can relieve the pain of heavy breasts, give your breasts a more uplifted and youthful look, allow you to regain a more active lifestyle and boost your self-confidence and self-esteem.
While big breasts are the envy of many, for some women, overly large breasts and excessive breast weight can cause discomfort, back, neck and shoulder problems. Large breasts can also cause sweating and rashes, making it difficult to play a sport or find clothing that fits. Or, you may simply feel that your breasts are too large and want to reduce your breast size.
Skilled plastic and reconstructive cosmetic surgeon, Dr Mark Edinburg of the Eden Institute in Sydney, is an expert in Surgical Breast Reduction. He will thoroughly consult with you to determine your concerns, desired breast size and shape, to ensure that you achieve breasts that are in proportion with your body.
Breast Reduction Surgery – also known as a reduction mammoplasty or more casually, as a Boob Reduction – involves removing excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin through incisions made around the areola or under the breast.
Some patients may choose to undergo a Breast Reduction and Lift at the same time. If a Breast Lift is included, the nipple may be lifted to a higher, more youthful position and the areola reduced in size, if desired. By using the latest surgical techniques, Dr Edinburg will ensure that scarring is kept to a minimum.
You may need to wear a support bra for several weeks after your Breast Reduction Surgery to help breasts hold their new shape. You will be able to return to work and normal activities within a week. Final results are apparent after swelling and bruising has fully dissipated.
Want to know about Male Breast Reduction (Gynaecomastia or Man Boobs or Moobs)?
Dr Edinburg and his team of experts are passionate about making sure that you are thoroughly assessed and that any concerns you may have been fully addressed. Dr Edinburg has the skills and experience to help you understand your options and surgery suitability. Surgery is always performed with the aim of providing as natural a look as possible.
We go out of our way to make sure you understand what is involved medically, financially and on a practical level (such as how much time you will need to take off work, how much pain to expect and how much help you will need with day-to-day activities).
Feeling good about your breasts can have a big impact on your confidence. Breast Reduction Surgery (also known as a reduction mammoplasty or occasionally spelled mammaplasty, or a boob reduction) is recommended if you have large or asymmetrical breasts that are causing you physical discomfort or psychological problems due to their size. By reducing the size of your breasts, improved proportion and balance can be restored to your body shape and figure. This then allows you to move around and exercise in a freer, more comfortable manner. The improvement to a woman’s shape and quality of life are good reasons to undergo Surgical Breast Reduction.
Dr Edinburg is an expert specialist plastic and reconstructive cosmetic surgeon in Sydney with over 20 years of outstanding experience in Breast Reduction Surgery. This specialist training means that he has the skills needed to combine cosmetic surgery with reconstructive surgery, therefore offering you the best possible combination of surgeries to give you the breasts that you want.
During your consultation with Dr Edinburg, you will discuss your concerns and talk with him about the size of breasts you would ideally like to have. If you decide to go ahead with a Breast Reduction (also known as a reduction mammoplasty or a boob reduction), we will book you in for a later date. We give you time and space to process all the information (there is always a lot to absorb) before you make your decision.
The procedure begins with Dr Edinburg marking up your breasts, so that he knows where to make incisions during surgery. Then, once you are under anaesthetic, he will make an incision in your breasts, usually in a line down from the areola to the crease beneath the breast (like an inverted ‘T’). The excess fat and tissue will be removed, together with some excess skin. The amount of fat and skin that is removed depends on the size that you would like your breasts to be. In the event that Dr Edinburg feels that he would like to include some Liposuction in the procedure to withdraw fat from the breast area, he will do so.
Although you may think that a boob reduction is the same for everyone with large breasts, exactly the opposite is true. No two women ever present with exactly the same combination of breast size, shape, nipple size and shape, body proportions and numerous additional contributing factors. Additionally, a woman’s comfort levels regarding size and shape, and her sense of body, all need to be taken into account. That is why we each need a detailed consultation and assessment before definite plans and options can be set out.
Breast Reduction Surgery usually takes around 2 to 3 hours under general anaesthetic in an accredited hospital.
Breast Reduction Surgery normally requires an overnight hospital stay.
When you wake up, you will be bandaged and plastic tubes (drains) may be attached to your breasts. Dr Edinburg will visit you post-surgery, the next day and after that as appropriate. After discharge from hospital, you will be contacted by our team and have access to contact us, along with check-ups from Dr Edinburg, post-surgery. You can get back to your normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks, however complete recovery generally takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Every cut results in a scar. However, Dr Edinburg is a specialist plastic and cosmetic surgeon in Sydney with the expertise and skills needed to minimise scarring. Dr Edinburg’s level of expertise means that he is able to choose from a variety of techniques to address your breast size and shape. Your options and expectations will be discussed with you at your consultation.
Your surgeon may use Steri-Strips (thin adhesive strips) in addition to your sutures, as they help minimise scarring and make the cuts easier to care for. Occasionally, silicone sheeting may be helpful later on, if required.
In addition, the application of creams, scar massage, laser therapy and wearing appropriate support for prolonged periods may help to reduce scarring. Every surgeon has a different approach to suit the patient’s specific needs.
Health, diet and genetics all play a role in scarring. While nothing can be done about your genes, ensuring that you are as healthy as possible and that you are eating a healthy and varied diet can both help to minimise scarring.
It is important to remember that the weight of large breasts often thins and stretches the breast tissue so the breast tissue is at an increased risk for raised, wide or irregular scars.
Dr Edinburg and his team communicate with you from first contact, during your consultation and when planning your surgery. Communication and support from Dr Edinburg and the team also continue throughout the post-operative process.
Depending on the extent of the Breast Reduction Surgery, you may experience numbness in your nipples and changes to nipple sensation. However, with a good knowledge of anatomy and with good technique, sensation should be retained. Many patients with large breasts have little or no sensation to start off with, and many patients make this a low priority compared to wanting the relief of smaller breasts.
In the case of extremely large, pendulous breasts, the nipple may be removed entirely before being repositioned, which will result in only limited, if any, sensation. Breastfeeding would also not be possible. Dr Edinburg will advise you if your breasts require this technique.
This question clearly illustrates that each patient’s case is different. Literally, no two women look the same or have exactly the same breast shape, size or body shape. Many different factors influence Dr Edinburg’s choice of surgical technique and modifications and adjustments made for each and every patient. In the end, a combination of art and science, skills and experience, are utilised to provide a solution for each patient’s Breast Reduction Surgery. This is why Dr Edinburg will consult with you in depth before you are booked in for Breast Reduction Surgery.
While there is no strict size limit for Breast Reduction Surgery, we do need to assess each patient face-to-face in order to determine your suitability for surgery. If you suffer from any of the following issues then you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction:
Back, neck or shoulder pain.
Breasts that feel ‘heavy’.
Skin rashes, irritation, infection or other unhealthy conditions beneath your breasts.
Deep bra strap indentations on your shoulders.
Breasts that get in the way of physical activity.
The cost of breast reduction surgery will depend on the method and extent of surgery. You can study more about the price on the "How Much does It Cost" section. Medicare and health fund rebates are usually applicable. All consultations for Breast Reduction Surgery will get a Medicare Rebate as long as you are referred by a GP.

Enlarged male breasts (gynaecomastia), also known as ‘man boobs’ or ‘moobs’, is a common condition that can be caused by a number of factors, including hormonal imbalances, steroid use, some drugs, medical conditions, or weight gain. The resulting excess tissue is resistant to diet and exercise and can range from a small tender lump under the nipple (caused by excess tissue), to larger woman-like breasts.
