There are two types of facelift surgery – a “mini facelift” or a full “SMAS” facelift (with necklift):
A mini facelift, or short-scar facelift, does not incorporate the all-important SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) layer beneath the skin and is, as a general guide, most appropriate for younger patients just starting to experience facial draping concerns. The SMAS layer is responsible for the facial ‘sagging’ that the vast majority of patients experience as a result of aging. Essentially, most patients need a full SMAS facelift, not a mini facelift, to achieve the long-lasting results they desire.
