Facelift (SMAS Facelift) Surgery for Men

The Eden Institute at Baulkham Hills has seen a significant rise in men seeking to rejuvenate their look. Face lifts are one of the most popular ways to do this, with longer lasting results. Your face is your most personal, unique feature. It’s the first thing someone notices about you, and it’s what makes you… you. So what do you do when the face you present to the world no longer represents the youthful, self-confident person you feel on the inside?

While ageing is a fact of life, there are many ways Dr Edinburg can help you achieve a refreshed, more youthful look: by removing lines, excess fat and facial sagging.

We offer facial rejuvenation procedures including Facelift Surgery.

A Face Lift is a comprehensive way to treat sagging cheeks and jowls, loose skin and deep creases around your eyes and mouth, and can reduce the age of your appearance by between 5 to 10 years.

A Face Lift involves an incision along your hairline, and around the ear, which allows your underlying facial muscle tissue to be tightened, and any excess skin and fat can then be removed. There are many ways of performing a Face Lift. In fact, there are about four types of Face Lifting techniques. In the first, the skin is elevated and tightened. In the second, the SMAS layer (sub-muscular aponeurotic layer – a fibromuscular layer with extensive attachments) is tightened and any excess skin is then simply removed. The third technique is a Composite Face Lift where the plane of the lift is both in front of and below the muscle and the skin component is excised under no tension. The fourth technique is a Deep Plane Lift just above the bone, called a subperiosteal elevation, and the skin treated as above.

Each of these techniques has advantages and disadvantages. Each technique may be indicated for a specific reason by Dr Edinburg during your pre-op consultation.

Various incisions can be made to achieve each of these techniques of Face Lifting. A short scar or mini-Face Lift incision makes a small scar and allows the operator to carry out a method of lifting only the skin, or performing a SMAS lift. The shorter the scar the less the exposure and the more difficult it is for a more extensive Face Lift. Hence, a short scar or mini-Face Lift would be indicated only for patients seeking a less extensive lift or for younger patients.

Some surgeons offer Face Lift surgery targeting the skin only. Dr Edinburg's preference is to use the SMAS Face Lift because this technique targets all the layers, and not just the skin, which will not retain its refreshed look for long without the underlying support. This means we do not offer a ‘lunch-time Face Lift’ and that you do need to stay in hospital overnight. Dr Edinburg uses techniques that will ensure the structure is adequately supported so your Face Lift is able to give you long lasting results.

Dr Edinburg will work with you to design a treatment plan that is realistic and addresses your specific needs. Your consultation with Dr Edinburg will give you time to explore and discuss all your options with him. You can rest assured that your procedure is in the very capable hands of a highly qualified and experienced Plastic Surgeon with over 20 years’ experience.

No two Face Lifts are the same, as this is not ‘off the shelf’ surgery. Realising that you are an individual, Dr Edinburg tailors your surgery according to what you specifically require to address your unique concerns.

Dr Edinburg has the skill and expertise to devise, alter, modify and adapt surgical techniques to best suit you. For example, if you are seeking greater facial symmetry you may benefit from Nose Job Surgery as part of your facelift.

Frequently Asked Questions

A SMAS Facelift usually takes around 3 to 5 hours and is conducted under general anaesthetic in a hospital.

Normally your hospital stay lasts 1 night , after which time you should be up and about. You should rest for about a week afterwards.

Swelling and bruising will settle within 1 to 3 weeks, with the best results seen in 1 to 2 months. Most scarring will refine over the next year.

At the Eden Institute, all our surgical and non-surgical services are about giving you a natural look whilst enhancing your features. Dr Edinburg performs his SMAS Facelift with the aim of making you look like you have just returned from a relaxing holiday. Instead of noticing you have had facial surgery, people may instead notice how refreshed and rejuvenated you look.

To minimise scarring, incisions are made along the hairline and in the creases behind your ears. Dr Edinburg personalises each facelift, so your scar lines may be placed differently compared to those of another person. Dr Edinburg will always use his specialist expertise to ensure you obtain the best possible scars for your face’s contours and features.

Whilst we continue to age after we have had facial surgery, the improvement you get from your facelift lasts for a lifetime.

The cost will depend on the method and extent of the facelift. Read more about the cost on the "How Much does It Cost" section. Once Dr Edinburg has had the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your concerns, we will supply a full estimate of fees for your proposed surgery, so that you know all your facts and figures - medical and financial - before you make your decision.

Mini Face Lift (S-Lift Procedure or Short-Scar Face Lift)

There are a number of definitions for what a Mini-Face Lift is. At the Eden Institute practice, we reserve a Mini Face Lift for those patients who would like to have a smaller procedure, rather than the normal Face Lift. This means that the scar tends to be somewhat shorter, in the shape of an 'S', in front of the ear and slightly behind the ear. The procedure involves lifting up the skin and cutting away any of the excess with subsequent sutures. It is, therefore, a skin only procedure, and does not adress the deeper layers of the face as does the usual (i.e. SMAS) Face Lift procedure. The Mini Face Lift procedure also does not last as long as the normal face lifting procedure, and the longevity of the result will depend on the nature of the patient's skin, the extent of sun damage and whether or not the patient smokes.

As this is a smaller procedure than the normal Face Lift, the operating time is reduced and the procedure can be done as a day stay procedure in hospital. The recovery time also tends to be somewhat quicker.

With over 20 years of outstanding Plastic Surgery experience, Eden Institute’s Dr Mark Edinburg is committed to tailoring your Mini Face Lift procedure to your individual needs, and to ensuring your results look natural, with minimal scarring.

It is easy to give different procedures different names, like Face Lift, or Mini-Face Lift. However, in the end, it is not the title of the surgery that makes the difference. The skill lies in the surgeon’s expertise and ability to modify procedures and tailor them according to each patient’s requirements and needs. So, Dr Edinburg will assess, and together with you, discuss realistic options for your situation. It is no use performing surgery that does not adequately address your facial needs. Similarly, Dr Edinburg will never recommend an option that you do not need. For example, some patients will require eyelid reduction surgery, to a greater or lesser extent with their face-lift. Some patients may require a neck-lift, and the degree of these may vary as well.

Your surgery will be personalised by Dr Edinburg, so that you have only the best enhancement procedure for your needs. If you feel you require a rejuvenated mid-face and brow area, you may want to consider an SMAS Face Lift, Eyelid Rejuvenation and Brow Lift. Dr Edinburg will work with you to tailor your Mini-Face Lift to meet your individual needs. There are a number of options available, and Dr Edinburg will work with you to offer you the best combination available for your facial concerns.
