As men age, the areas of the face and neck become the most obvious signs of skin ageing. These are areas that are highly susceptible to sagging skin, excess fat and a loosening of the muscles. Generally, a Neck Lift is incorporated into a Face Lift procedure as neck sagging is usually accompanied by sagging of the jowls or skin over the lower jaw, and the correct way to correct this requires a combination neck lift and lower face lift. As with all our patients, no two people present with the same problem, and therefore, no two people ever require the same solution. Dr Edinburg will help determine if neck surgery alone is correct for you.
A Neck Lift procedure can incorporate tightening of loose, sagging skin and muscles in conjunction with Liposuction, Liposculpture or Fat Transfer. Incisions are made in the fold under the chin and behind the ear, so scarring is hidden as well as possible. Excess fat may be removed by liposuction if required and underlying muscles are tightened and secured with stitches. Skin is tightened and joined together for a smoother neck profile.
After a Neck Lift, you may have to wear a chin strap for around a week for support and to assist healing. After this, stitches are removed and most people can return to work. Most swelling and bruising resolves in about 4 weeks, when your new neckline will be visible.
Dr Edinburg may recommend combining a Neck Lift or Neck Liposuction with a Face Lift or non-surgical skin rejuvenation, such as laser resurfacing to smooth out wrinkles and remove brown age spots for optimum results to your neck, jawline and skin.
Depending on your needs and the procedure required, Neck Lift Surgery takes 1 to 3 hours under general anaesthetic, with a day or overnight stay.
We cannot stress enough that each patient’s solution is unique. Reading about procedures and effects does not give you a realistic assessment of your case. An in-depth consultation with Dr Edinburg will help you understand the most appropriate way to proceed.
You may feel slightly bruised and swollen, with discomfort improving over the first couple of weeks.
Most patients recover fully in around 7 to 10 days.
You can normally go back to work after 10 days, although heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for around 3 weeks.
To minimise any scarring, Dr Edinburg usually makes incisions under the chin and behind the ears.
