Cosmetic Surgery After Bariatric Surgery

The primary purpose of cosmetic surgery after Bariatric Surgery is to remove excess tissue: removal of excess loose sagging skin improves body shape, giving patients a slimmer figure.

Cosmetic Surgery after Bariatric Surgery (Weight Loss Surgery)

After Bariatric Surgery, it is imperative that patients are committed to a healthy diet coupled with regular exercise in order to maintain outcomes and avoid gaining weight post surgery. Additionally, patients who lose a lot of weight after Bariatric Surgery may find that they have developed excess, loose or folded skin which will require additional surgery to remove and tighten.

For example, you may feel that your arms look saggier or loose, or perhaps your abdominal area has some excess skin hanging around the sides. Other areas that may experience sagging skin include the neck, face, chest, thighs and buttocks.

Some procedures that patients may need to undergo after Bariatric Surgery include:

  • Belt Lipectomy
  • Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty)
  • Brachioplasty (Arm Surgery)

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Dr Edinburg is a skilled surgeon with more than 20 years of experience.

As a highly skilled and experienced plastic, reconstructive and cosmetic surgeon, Dr Edinburg enjoys the reconstructive/cosmetic combination needed for patients who have undergone Bariatric Surgery. You will notice in your consultation that Dr Edinburg will design you an individual surgical plan to address your specific concerns.

You can have surgery on any area of the body or face. The most commonly treated areas are the tummy area, hips, back (upper or lower), arms, breasts, chest, and face. Some people require a combination of surgeries.

Everyone’s body changes in different ways after Bariatric Surgery, so we won’t know what you require until you and Dr Edinburg have a face-to-face consultation. This gives you the opportunity to tell (and show) Dr Edinburg what your concerns are, while also giving him the chance to thoroughly examine you and conduct a detailed assessment. He will then discuss your options with you

This depends on what procedure you have. For example, Tummy Tuck Surgery may require a 3 to 4 day stay in hospital and 3 to 4 weeks off work, with you being up and about from the day after surgery. On the other hand, some surgeries only require an overnight stay in hospital and a shorter recovery time. Dr Edinburg will be able to tell you more at your consultation.

Yes, there may be. It depends what you need and what level of health fund cover you have.

Rebates may be available for Breast Reduction Surgery (male or female), some categories of Breast Lift Surgery, some thigh, axilla, and back surgeries. Medicare rebates for Tummy Tuck Surgery changed in January 2016 and are now limited to patients who have had weight loss (which is stable) and who have developed a rash in the skinfold. We will work through all of this with you when you consult with Dr Edinburg.

As with all cosmetic procedures, Dr Edinburg heartily recommends you are as close to your end weight as possible. That way he can design options for you knowing that your body is not still changing weight (and shape) to any large extent.

Again, this depends on many factors. The answer is no different to the answer we give to any patient having cosmetic surgery.

It depends on how much surgery you are having, what parts of the body the surgery is to, lifestyle factors that may affect healing, genetic factors, and some we probably don’t even know about yet. The one constant is that, as an experienced, fully-qualified plastic surgeon, Dr Edinburg will do his utmost to control what he can from a surgical point of view (like techniques, angles of cut and experience with best aesthetic outcomes).

Yes, and many patients do. There are limits to how much surgery Dr Edinburg will perform at any one time, but this varies from patient to patient. Dr Edinburg will discuss this with you at your consultation.
