Liposuction involves making small incisions in the affected area and using a small thin tube (cannula) to dislodge and suction out fat deposits. After surgery, you may need to wear a compression garment for a few weeks for support and to reduce swelling and bruising.
Because the incisions are so small, and usually hidden in the body’s natural creases, they should heal to become barely visible. After several months, swelling should fully subside, revealing your slimmer, firmer contours.
Liposuction is suitable for under the chin, upper arms, breasts, abdomen, hips, thighs, knees, calves and ankles. Dr Edinburg will only recommend Liposuction Surgery if he feels it is right for you, and will tailor an individual cosmetic surgery solution to suit you, which may be combined with other procedures for optimum body contouring results.
Dr Edinburg has found that it is essential that only appropriate liposuction is done. Best results are achieved in localised areas, but it should be noted that general obesity cannot be suitably treated with liposuction. In other words, careful assessment is very important. In addition, a careful plan of where to perform the liposuction is essential in order to achieve a natural, enhanced effect.
Liposuction is best for patients who are in good health and who are not obese, but have localised areas of accumulated fat. Liposuction can be carried out on multiple areas of the body such as the stomach, buttocks, hips, thighs, arms and back. Liposuction is equally effective for both men and women and can be carried out on more than one area of the body during the same procedure.
Some people use the word Liposculpture, but this essentially refers to liposuction.
Before you commit to surgery, it is important that you have realistic expectations of what liposuction can and can’t achieve. For this reason, we will book you in for a long consultation with our specialist plastic and cosmetic surgeon, Dr Edinburg. This allows him to spend the time needed to understand your concerns, and plan how to proceed. During this time, any questions you have about the procedure can be addressed.
Liposuction is an effective procedure to consider if you have pockets of fat that have proven difficult to shift even with diet and exercise. Alone, it is not suitable for the treatment of sagging and loose skin. Depending on the area you want to target, liposuction is often recommended in conjunction with other procedures such as Tummy Tuck Surgery, Breast Lift Surgery and Arm Lift Surgery, to reduce fat and tighten the skin.
Liposuction can take from one to three hours. At the Eden Institute, every treatment is individualised, because no two people require exactly the same procedure. This is very evident when it comes to liposuction. Once Dr Edinburg has assessed your case, he will be able to advise you on how long the surgery should take. The length of the surgery time will also depend on the size of the area that is being treated, and if the surgery is being carried out on more than one part of the body.
Liposuction is generally performed under general anaesthetic in a hospital or a day-surgery registered facility, as a day procedure.
Hospital arrangements will be made after your consultation with Dr Edinburg. Should you be required to stay in hospital, you will be taken to a recovery area after your surgery where you will continue to be closely monitored. Later in the day, you will be visited by Dr Edinburg or a member of his team to ensure that you are doing well and that your wounds are healing effectively. If your procedure is planned to take place in hospital, it is unlikely that you will be required to stay for more than a single night.
Recovery normally takes 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the extent of your procedure. Dr Edinburg will provide you with specific instructions on how to care for the surgical site and how to achieve the swiftest recovery possible. You will be required to wear pressure garments after the surgery to help with your recovery. The pressure garments are beneficial during the recovery process as they ensure that the skin is held firmly against the body, which encourages healing without the likelihood of any sagging. The pressure garments also put pressure on the lymphatic system, increase blood flow and may help to reduce swelling. During the first 48 hours after your surgery you may still experience some swelling and bruising. The swelling should subside within a few days, and bruising will typically fade within 7-10 days. It is important to rest after the surgery to ensure that your body is able to heal itself and to avoid any unforeseen complications.
Cost will depend on the method and extent of surgery but prices start from $2200 for a small area, such as the chin or knees, and from $4400 for larger areas. These costs cover the surgeon's fee only.
It is important to make sure you are well informed before choosing a plastic surgeon. Specialist plastic surgery qualifications are imperative in the decision-making process, and choosing the right plastic surgeon will help you to feel more relaxed and confident about your impending surgery. It is your body after all.
