Breast Enlargement Surgery or ‘boob jobs’ are one of the most common plastic surgery procedures in Australia but not all boob jobs are the same.

Breast Augmentation Surgery can help to boost your confidence and give you the dream breasts you desire.
Dr Edinburg specialises in creating natural-looking breasts using silicone implants.
Using the very latest surgical techniques to minimise recovery time, he expertly matches the right breast implant for your body shape.
Your breast implants will be placed directly behind the breast tissue and over the pectoral muscle (a sub-mammary/ sub-glandular placement) or under the pectoral muscle (a sub-muscular placement). Implant sizes and shapes (and there are a number of these) will be discussed with you. Dr Edinburg will tailor the solution to suit your body shape.
We know that you are not the same as the patient seen just before you. Neither is your surgery. Dr Edinburg and our team pride themselves on their service and attention to individual detail.
Dr Edinburg will assess your requirements and advise if the implants should be placed directly behind the breast tissue and over the pectoral muscle (a sub-mammary/ sub-glandular placement) or under the pectoral muscle (a sub-muscular placement).
The method for inserting and positioning implants depends on the type of implant, degree of enlargement desired, your body type, and Dr Edinburg’s recommendations.
Dr Edinburg’s expertise and experience as a specialist plastic surgeon is essential in helping you choose the correct implant. Our highly personalised patient care ensures a successful and attractive Breast Augmentation, to give you the results you’ve always dreamed of.
Most people can’t afford long periods off work or study. Dr Edinburg understands you want to bounce back from your breast surgery as quickly as possible, which is why he offers The Short Recovery Technique for Breast Implant Surgery to speed up the recovery process.
This procedure is performed with gentle precision to minimise tissue stretching or trauma. Dr Edinburg takes special measures to reduce the bruising, bleeding, swelling, and pain that are usually associated with traditional breast implant surgeries.
Your surgery is usually complete in 1-2 hours, and, depending on each patient, you need fewer medications, have reduced side effects and recovery can be expected within 1-2 weeks. You may need to wear a specially designed bra for a few weeks for comfort.
Using the Short Recovery Technique shortens the procedure to approximately 1 hour, with recovery expected within 1-2 weeks. In most cases, Dr Edinburg recommends that you wear a specially designed bra for the first week and sometimes for a few weeks after. This will enhance your comfort after the procedure.
The Short Recovery Technique is a suitable option for those who need downtime to be kept to a minimum and those who would like to keep post-surgery pain and disturbances to their life at an absolute minimum.
If you are interested in the Short Recovery Technique and would like more information about this process, please contact the Eden Institute so that we may arrange for you to meet with Dr Edinburg, who is a highly qualified and experienced in Breast Augmentation Surgeon, and who will take the time to understand your goals and needs.
During Breast Augmentation Surgery, incisions are usually made in the creases under the breast, so that scars are kept very discreet.
The implant is inserted into a pocket under the chest muscle or directly behind the breast tissue. If Breast Lift Surgery is also included, then the breast tissue is lifted and reshaped for enhanced firmness. Enlarged areolas may be reduced. The incisions are then closed with dissolvable stitches.
Because Dr Edinburg is a Plastic Surgeon Specialist, his skills and years of training allow him to tailor the surgery to your individual needs, accurately addressing all the varied aspects of your breast surgery.
In order to achieve natural-looking results, the ideal breast size and shape should aim to be in proportion with the rest of your body’s proportions. There are a wide range of breast implant sizes and shapes available, hence careful selection is vital.
The goal is to select an implant with the appropriate height, width and projection that is a good fit with your overall body shape and image. Dr Edinburg has many years of experience and has performed a variety of different types of successful Breast Augmentation Surgery. He will take into account factors such as the thickness of your skin, your physique, chest muscle, existing breast column and natural breast tissue, when determining the final suitable breast size for you, and he will guide you through making your choice. Most importantly, Dr Edinburg will help you to make a choice that will not only enhance your appearance, but which is also a safe choice that supports your health in the long-term.
Your personal consultation with Dr Edinburg will give you a good idea of the most appropriate size and shape of implants for you. Everyone has differently shaped breasts and bodies, and Dr Edinburg will always recommend that you choose implants that are right for you, instead of copying what someone else has had. As Dr Edinburg is a specialist plastic surgeon and an expert in Breast Augmentation Surgery, he will use his skills to help you choose what is suitable for you while also considering your desired aesthetic goals.
Our aim is to find the best possible option for your body shape and concerns.
Dr Edinburg will recommend an implant size that will help restore ‘balance’ to your body rather than creating an ‘excessively big’ look. Dr Edinburgh will not insert implants that are too big for your chest wall as this may compromise your overall health. The aim of Breast Augmentation Surgery is to achieve a proportionate look that appears natural for your frame.
Breast implants are available on the market in both saline and silicone form. Dr Edinburg prefers to use silicone implants of superior quality. He will help guide you so that you make the best choices for yourself.
Breast Implant Options
Round-shaped implants are very popular with patients as they help to increase breast volume and fullness. In comparison to teardrop implants, round implants tend to emphasize fullness in the top part of your breast, whereas teardrop implants are usually fuller in the lower part of your breast.
Teardrop-shaped implants, also known as anatomical-shape implants, are contoured to allow for greater fullness towards the bottom of the breast. This option is well-suited to women who have little natural breast tissue, or women who are concerned about droopiness in their breasts and would like to improve the appearance of the existing breast shape.
Although patients sometimes come with requests for a particular type of implant, Dr Edinburg will recommend the implant most appropriate for you. There are always advantages and disadvantages to different choices of implants, sizes and shapes. This is where Dr Edinburg will bring in his specialist plastic surgery training and many years of experience to help you make the right choice for your body type and breast shape.
All implants have a silicone coating on the outside. Smooth and textured surfaces are available and Dr Edinburg will discuss the best option for you.
Smooth-shelled implants have a shiny polished surface and are usually a lot thinner in comparison to a textured implant. These implants are generally easier to work with as they are more mobile and can move within the breast pocket.
Textured implants are made with a relatively rough surface and are slightly thicker than the surface of a smooth implant. These implants do not move or rotate easily within the breast pocket.
This refers to how much the implant projects forward from the chest and can range between a low and high profile. Dr Edinburg will help you determine the choice of profile that is most suitable for you taking into account your current figure, chest wall and implant size.
Placement of breast implants behind the pectoral muscle or in front of the pectoral muscle depends on how much breast tissue you have. Generally speaking, if you have a small amount of breast tissue, the implant will be placed under the pectoral muscle.
If you have adequate breast tissue, the implant can go in front of the pectoral muscle. Dr Edinburg will determine the amount of breast tissue you have at the time of your consultation.
All decisions and suggestions are always discussed with you.
It is possble but it is a rare occurrence.
Dr Edinburg uses what he believes are top-of-the-line implants. He will not compromise on quality and he believes that this is one of the reasons for his very low rupture rate.
Silicone breast implants are pre-filled with an elastic silicone gel, which feels and moves much like natural breast tissue. The casing for silicone breast implants often has a textured surface and is much thicker, which minimises the chance of visible rippling, wrinkling and hardening of the implants. The cohesive gel contained in the outer silicone shell aims to resemble real breast tissue and has a firm and non-runny consistency. When compared to saline implants, silicone implants have a softer feel that are closer in appearance and touch to that of natural breasts. Silicone implants tend to maintain their shape and form more effectively than saline implants.
Yes. Depending on your needs, a consultation with Dr Edinburg will determine the best procedure for you, which may involve enlargement of one breast only. Whether or not this is possible depends on the shape, size and position of the nipple on the opposite breast. If all those aspects are satisfactory, then a simple enlargement of the smaller breast is quite feasible. Since there are many varied sizes and shapes of implant available, it should be a relatively straightforward procedure to match both sides.
However, we may advise different techniques on each breast, or a combination of the following procedures:
During your consultation, Dr Edinburg will determine which procedure is best suited to you and your concerns.
It is important to know that a plastic surgeon is a specialist in both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, and Dr Edinburg has many years of training and a wide variety of expertise in many different body situations. So, if you present with an out-of-the-ordinary situation, it is likely that Dr Edinburg will have seen a similar problem before and will be able to recommend a treatment plan that will solve your problem.
Choosing the size of an implant will depend on a number of measurements including the breast base diameter, the projection of the nipple from the chest wall and how much breast tissue you have. Once these factors are known, the placement of the implant behind or in front of the pectoral muscle becomes important. Finally, a teardrop-shaped implant will help achieve a natural look without fullness in the upper breast.
Breast Enlargement Surgery usually takes around one to two hours under general anaesthetic. However this may vary depending on incision and placement options for every individual patient.
Incision sites include inframammary (lower breast crease), periareolar and transaxillary. Dr Edinburg's preferred method of performing Breast Augmentation Surgery is through the inframammary crease incision. Making the incision in the crease under the breast is one of the most common and popular methods today and is believed to allow for the most precise implant placement. This incision is made when the implant is to be inserted under the chest wall (pectoral) muscle. After making the incision Dr Edinburg will create a pocket for the implant to position it behind the nipple. As this all occurs in the crease under the breast, scars are usually well-concealed and limited.
The skin always heals by scarring. However, as we all know, there are different grades of scars. Dr Edinburg, using his skills and training as a Plastic Surgery Specialist, will utilise a variety of techniques to ensure minimal scarring. Also, the scar is usually created in the natural fold of the skin underneath the natural fall of the breast, so is virtually unnoticeable.
Breast Enlargement Surgery usually requires an day or overnight hospital stay.
Any pain should subside in a few days. You’ll need to limit your physical activity for least 7-14 days before slowly resuming more strenuous tasks. The amount of downtime required, and the amount of time needed to make a full recovery that allows you to resume all normal activity, is largely dependent upon your individual surgery. Dr Edinburg will discuss this with you.
Dr Edinburg and his team are involved with you all the way through the post-operative period, so you have support before, during and after your surgery.
As the breast implants are always placed behind the breast tissue, the milk ducts that produce the milk from the lobes and lobules of the breast to the nipple are not affected. Therefore, most patients can breastfeed after Breast Augmentation Surgery, although Dr Edinburg will discuss this with you further.
From a surgical point of view, we recommend having Breast Augmentation Surgery when you are at your ideal weight and have finished having children. Your body goes through lots of changes during and after pregnancy, many of which may affect your breast size, shape and position. By waiting, you will see your final results for the long-term. For those who want to see results sooner, this is still possible. As long as you are aware and comfortable with the fact that your results may change after pregnancy and breastfeeding, we can go ahead with the procedure. Depending on the type of implant you require, Breast Augmentation Surgery will not affect your ability to breastfeed as the implant can be placed behind the breast tissue.
Cost will depend on the method and extent of surgery, but prices start from $11 000 (all inclusive – surgeon's fee, anaesthetist's fee, cost of high-quality implants, postoperative surgical specialist bra, and hospital stay). Dr Edinburg and the team at the Eden Institute will provide you with a comprehensive quote upon your consultation.A range of other options including longer hospital stays and implant shapes are also available at additional cost.
In our experience it’s never worth cutting corners when it comes to Breast Augmentations. We have seen a significant increase in patients coming from disreputable and often cheap cosmetic surgery clinics who have been disappointed by their experience and results.
Unfortunately the savings from cheap surgery are often overshadowed when you’re dissatisfied with results.
This is the most difficult decision for many women. Most women state that they do not want to be too large or look too "fake", and that their greatest fear is that they will look unnatural after surgery.
There are many different strategies when helping you to select an implant size during consultation.
Dr Edinburg will discuss your desired results and tailor the solution to suit your body shape.
A good general guideline is that you can start slowly (walking) after a week and work up to more aerobic activity as you feel comfortable. Dr Edinburg will give you full instructions when you meet with him.
You may have recently seen some media on the safety of breast implants.
We are here to guide you through this information update and ensure you are safe and supported throughout your surgery journey.
This concerns the incidence of a form of lymphoma (ALCL), which has occurred in around 500 cases of the estimated 35 million women with implants worldwide. The most accurate data at present shows that risk of this rare type of lymphoma varies from 1:2,700 up to 1:80,000 depending upon the type of textured surface. It should also be noted that ALCL is not a breast cancer, which is a separate disease and impacts around 1 in 8 women regardless of whether they have implants or not.
How is the Eden Institute reducing this risk?
At Eden, we take this matter very seriously and when performing Breast Augmentation Surgery, Dr Edinburg uses a technique which helps to prevent the formation of biofilm. He has demonstrated this by committing to the Macquarie University 14 point plan to reduce the risk of infection. By using this plan, Dr Edinburg ensures that all patients are given the benefit of proven research to combat infection and have the best chance of a stable, long lasting and successful outcome.
The site includes a register of those Surgeons who have committed to this plan, including Dr Mark Edinburg. During your initial consultation with us or elsewhere, we recommend discussing all risks associated with surgery including the choice of implant and the steps your surgeon takes to avoid bacterial contamination of the implant at time of surgery.
Which breast implants do you use at The Eden Institute?
At Eden we use implants from one of the world’s leading implant manufacturers, Mentor. Mentor implants are backed by a lifetime guarantee, with a demonstrated safety record and low rates of implant-related complications. Patient safety is Mentor’s first priority.
Should I be concern about a change in my breasts?
If you are concerned about your breast implants, particularly swelling or hardening, then please immediately seek medical advice from your GP or if you had your surgery here, you should book an appointment with our surgeon. The first step is generally an ultrasound to investigate the source of swelling, which in most cases is not related to ALCL.
