Breast Reduction Surgery can relieve the pain of heavy breasts, give your breasts a more uplifted and youthful look, allow you to regain a more active lifestyle and boost your self-confidence and self-esteem.

Breast Reduction Surgery (Reduction Mammoplasty)

While big breasts are the envy of many, for some women, overly large breasts and excessive breast weight can cause discomfort, back, neck and shoulder problems.Large breasts can also cause sweating and rashes, and make it difficult to play sport or find clothing that fits. Or, you may simplyfeel that your breasts are too large and want to reduce your breast size.

Skilled plastic surgeon Dr Mark Edinburg, of the Eden Institute in Sydney, is an expert in Breast Reduction Surgery. He will thoroughly consult with you to determine your concerns, and your desired breast size and shape to ensure that you achieve breasts that are in proportion with your body.

Breast Reduction Surgery involves removing excess breast fat, glandular tissue and skin through incisions made around the areola or under the breast. If a Breast Lift is included, the nipple may be lifted to a higher, more youthful position and the areola reduced in size if desired. By using the latest surgical techniques, Dr Edinburg will ensure that scarring is kept to a minimum.

You may need to wear a support bra for several weeks after your Breast Reduction Surgery to help breasts hold their new shape, and you can return to work and normal activities within a week. Final results are apparent after swelling and bruising has fully dissipated.

Dr Edinburg and his team of experts are passionate about making sure that you are thoroughly assessed and that any concerns you may have are fully addressed. Dr Edinburg has the skills and experience to help you understand your options and surgery suitability. Surgery is always performed with the aim of providing as natural a look as possible.

We go out of our way to make sure you understand what is involved medically, financially and on a practical level (such as how much time you will need to take off work, how much pain to expect and how much help you will need with day-to-day activities).

Frequently Asked Questions

Feeling good about your breasts can have a big impact on your confidence. Breast Reduction Surgery is recommended if you have large or asymmetrical breasts that are causing you physical discomfort or psychological problems due to their size. By reducing the size of your breasts, improved proportion and balance can be restored to your body shape and figure. This then allows you to move around and exercise in a freer, more comfortable manner. The improvement to a woman’s shape and quality of life are good reasons to undergo Breast Reduction Surgery.

Dr Edinburg is an expert specialist plastic and reconstructive cosmetic surgeon with over 20 years of outstanding experience in Breast Reduction Surgery. This specialist training means that he has the skills needed to combine cosmetic surgery with reconstructive surgery, and can therefore offer you the best possible combination of surgeries togive you the breasts that you want.

During your consultation with Dr Edinburg, you will discuss your concerns and talk with him about the size of breasts you would ideally like to have. If you decide to go ahead with Breast Reduction Surgery, we will book you in for a later date.

The procedure begins with Dr Edinburg ‘marking’ up your breasts, so that he knows where to make incisions during surgery. Then, once you are under anaesthetic, he will make an incision in your breasts, usually in a line down from the areola to the crease beneath the breast. The excess fat and tissue will be removed, together with some excess skin. The amount of fat and skin that is removed depends on the size that you would like your breasts to be, post-surgery and recovery. In the event that Dr Edinburg feels that he would like to include some Liposuction in the procedure to withdraw fat from the breast area, he will do so.

Although you may think that Breast Reduction Surgery is the same for everyone with large breasts, exactly the opposite is true. No two women ever present with exactly the same combination of breast size, shape, nipple size and shape, body proportions, and numerous additional contributing factors. Additionally, our comfort levels regarding size and shape, and our sense of body, all need to be taken into account. That is why we each need a detailed consultation and assessment before definite plans and options can be set out.

Breast Reduction Surgery usually takes around 2 to 3 hours under general anaesthetic.

Breast Reduction Surgerynormally requires a hospital stay of 2 to 3 days.

When you wake up, you will be bandaged and plastic tubes (drains) may be attached to your breasts. Dr Edinburg will visit you post-surgery, the next day and after that as appropriate. After discharge from hospital, you will usually have several check-ups with him post-surgery. You can get back to your normal activities within 1 to 2 weeks, however complete recovery generally takes 4 to 6 weeks.

Every cut results in a scar. However, Dr Edinburg is a specialist plastic and cosmetic surgeon, and has the expertise and skills needed to minimise scarring. Dr Edinburg’s level of expertise means that he is able to choose from a variety of techniques to address your breast size and shape. Your options and expectations will be discussed with you at your consultation.

Your surgeon may use Steri-Strips (thin adhesive strips)to close your woundsbecause they help minimise scarring and are easier to care for. Occasionally, silicone sheeting may be helpful.

In addition, the application of creams, scar massage, laser therapy and wearing appropriate support for prolonged periods, all help to reduce scarring. Every surgeon has a different approach, to suit the patient’s specific needs.

Health, diet and genetics all play a role in scarring. While nothing can be done about your genes, ensuring that you are as healthy as possible and that you are eating a healthy and varied diet can both help to minimise scarring.

It is important to remember that the weight of large breasts often thins and stretches the breast tissue so the breast tissue is at an increased risk for raised, wide or irregular scars.

Depending on the extent of the Breast Reduction Surgery, you may experience numbness in your nipples and changes to nipple sensation. However, with good knowledge of the anatomy and with good technique, sensation should be retained. Many patients with large breastshave little or no sensation to start off with, and many patients make this a low priority compared to wanting the relief of smaller breasts.

In the case of extremely large, pendulous breasts, the nipple may be removed entirely before being repositioned, which will result in only limited, if any sensation. Breastfeeding would also not be possible. Dr Edinburg will advise you if your breasts require this technique.

This question clearly illustrates that each patient’s case is different. Literally, no two women look the same or have exactly the same breast shape, size or body shape. Many different factors influence Dr Edinburg’s choiceof surgical technique, and modifications and adjustments are made for each and everypatient. In the end, a combination of art and science, skills and experience, are utilised to provide a solution for each patient’s Breast Reduction Surgery. This is why Dr Edinburg will consult with you in depth before you are booked in for Breast Reduction Surgery.

Whilst there is no strict size limit for Breast Reduction Surgery, we do need to assess each patient face-to-face in order to determine your suitability for surgery. If you suffer from any of the following issues, then you may be a good candidate for a breast reduction:

  • Back, neck or shoulder pain.
  • Breasts that feel ‘heavy’.
  • Skin rashes, irritation, infection or other unhealthy conditions beneath your breasts.
  • Deep bra strap indentations on your shoulders.
  • Breasts that get in the way of physical activity.

Cost will depend on the method and extent of surgery but prices start from $8500. Medicare and health fund rebatesareusually applicable. All consultations for Breast Reduction Surgery will get a Medicare Rebate as long as you are referred by a GP.
