A mini facelift, or short-scar facelift, is a medical procedure that involves less skin removal and draping of the skin than a full SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) facelift.
The incisions are made in and around your natural ear curves and sometimes into the hairline behind the ear. Once healed, they are difficult to see.
The procedure is performed with the patient under light anaesthesia and delivers quick recovery after the operation (around 14 days recovery compared to around 3 to 5 weeks for a full facelift).
Typically, this surgery does not incorporate the all-important SMAS layer beneath the skin. This helps explain why this procedure takes less time, and requires less healing, and anaesthesia. The SMAS layer is responsible for all the 'sagging' that the vast majority of patients have. In Dr Edinburg’s 20 plus years of experience, although mini facelifts appear more desirable to the patient, they are rarely the best option. Essentially, most patients need a facelift, not a mini facelift, to achieve the long-lasting results they are hoping for.
Although we are aware many doctors offer this type of surgery regularly to patients as a 'lunchtime lift' surgery, in Dr Edinburg considerable experience and honest opinion as a specialist plastic surgeon, Mini Facelift Surgery is usually not the best option.
However, if, after consultation, you decide to go ahead with a mini facelift, you can be assured that Dr Edinburg will use his considerable experience to tailor your Mini Facelift Surgery to your individual needs. He will also ensure that your results look natural, and that you will have minimal scarring.
It is easy to give different procedures different names, like facelift, or mini facelift. However, in the end, it is not the title of the surgery that makes the difference. The skill lies in the surgeon’s expertise and ability to modify procedures and tailor them according to each patient’s requirements and needs.
Dr Edinburg will assess, and together with you, discuss realistic options for your situation. It is no use performing surgery that does not adequately address your facial needs. Similarly, Dr Edinburg will never recommend an option that you do not need. For example, some patients will require Eyelid Surgery, to a greater or lesser extent with their facelift, while others may require Neck Lift Surgery, and the degree of these may vary as well.
Your surgery will be personalised by Dr Edinburg, so that you have only the best enhancement procedure for your needs. If you feel you require a rejuvenated mid-face and brow area, you may want to consider a Facelift, Eyelid Surgery and Brow Lift Surgery. Dr Edinburg will work with you to tailor your mini Facelift to meet your individual needs. There are a number of options available, and Dr Edinburg will offer you the best combination available for your facial concerns.
Mini Facelift Surgery usually takes around 3 hours.
Swelling and bruising will settle within 1 to 3 weeks, with the best results seen in 1 to 2 months. Most scarring will refine over the next year.
An Eden Institute mini facelift, or short-scar facelift, aims to give you that ‘just returned from holidays’ look, so instead of realising you have had a facelift, people may instead notice how refreshed and well you look.
Cost will depend on the method and extent of the mini facelift, but starts from $6,000 (surgeon’s fee). Once Dr Edinburg has had the opportunity to meet with you and discuss your concerns, we will supply a full estimate of fees for your proposed surgery, so that you know all your facts and figures –medical and financial – before you make your decision

Mini Facelift Surgery can also be combined with Neck Lift Surgery, Brow Lift Surgery or Eyelid Surgery, as well as Laser Skin Resurfacing, Medical-Grade Microdermabrasion, Medical-grade Facial Peels, Wrinkle Relaxer Injections, Lip Enhancement Treatments, and Wrinkle Filler Injections (Dermal Fillers).
Facial Surgery can help to significantly improve your appearance, however this is just the first step. Post-surgery care is equally important to ensure that your outcomes are enhanced and maintained.
In particular, if you are pursuing facial rejuvenation procedures such as Facelift Surgery, Laser Skin Resurfacing, Medical-Grade Microdermabrasion or Medical-Grade Facial Peels, we recommend that you use quality medical-grade skincare post-surgery to retain and prolong your treatment results.
Why medical-grade? Medical-grade skincare is often formulated by clinicians and physicians and is based on results and trials. It contains a higher concentration of active ingredients than products available to purchase in a supermarket and is created to target specific skin concerns and conditions. In some cases it can enhance and prolong the results of cosmetic surgery and work to transform the skin and offer ongoing results rather than a quick fix.
It is natural for your skin to be slightly sensitive after facial surgery which is why good quality skincare is essential to ensure the fastest recovery and best results. We also recommend our patients to switch to Medical-Grade Mineral Makeup post treatments as pure mineral makeup is crafted from high quality natural ingredients that can be beneficial for your skin. We may also recommend your start skincare treatment before your procedure to get maximum value and results from it.
Eden is a specialist medical clinic and our commitment to caring for our patients doesn’t stop after surgery. We always make tailored recommendations for all our patients to help them with their recovery and to maximise their aesthetic goals.
